.CV domain names open up to the world of resumes

.CV domain names are now marketed for their meaning as Curriculum Vitae.

This summer saw the establishment of a partnership between OlaCV, an American company, and ARME, Cape Verde’s domain regulator.

In this respect, Ope Awoyemi, president of OlaCV, underlines the considerable potential of .CV domain names for Curriculum Vitae. He declared that the ” CV is a term used by professionals in Canada, Europe, Africa, India and China. Together, these markets have a professional workforce and a population approaching 3.5 billion people, representing a significant market potential. “.

Mr. Awoyemi is an entrepreneur who has also held senior positions at Indeed. As such, he sees.CV as much more than just a domain name.

On the registry’s website, it states that ” with .cv, you can stand out and effectively present your skills, experience and unique value to the world “.

Cape Verde sells its .CV domain names for Curriculum Vitae

.CV is the country-code Top-Level-Domain (ccTLD) associated with Cape Verde. Cape Verde is an island state in West Africa. It comprises an archipelago of ten volcanic islands. Cape Verde lies off the coasts of Senegal and Mauritania in the Atlantic Ocean.

This West African island nation has a population of over half a million. A former colony of Portugal, Portuguese is the country’s main official language.

Cape Verde joins the club of countries marketing its “ccTLD” worldwide, based on its meaning in other languages.

Other ccTLDs have followed suit. For example, Tuvalu’s .TV and Anguilla’s .AI have become lucrative assets, contributing significantly to their respective economies through registration fees.

Under these conditions, .CV domain names are open to all, with no special registration requirements.

Solidnames offers .CV domain name registration at €48 ex VAT / year. This rate applies to non-premium domain names. In fact, the registry has listed almost 300,000 .CV domain names sold at a higher rate, cf list available here.

The registry anticipated an increase in cybersquatting with this new marketing. WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center launches dispute resolution services for .CV (Cape Verde) domain names. As of October 2024, the WIPO Center is providing dispute resolution services for .CV domain names, currently as sole provider, under the UDRP rules.

.CV domain names versus other job-related extensions

The domain name industry counts other Internet extensions linked to the world of employment.

In particular, there was the historic “Sponsored TLD” .JOBS, launched in 2005. These initial restrictive registration conditions did not allow this extension to achieve great commercial success.

After this “Legacy TLD”, new Internet extensions have targeted this sector of activity. These include .CAREER and .CARRERS, both singular and plural.

Both open to all, .CAREER has just 1,400 domain names, while the plural .CAREERS has just over 10,000.

It’s to be hoped that the new .CV registry will be more successful with “Curriculum Vitae” domain names.

The fact that the extension is short and widely known for Curriculum Vitae gives it a number of advantages.

It’s worth remembering that .CV is one of the extensions covered by Solidnames’ Brand Alert service for detecting abuse.

Finally, a number of Cape Verde sLDs have also been integrated into the GlobalBlock program of the Brand Safety Alliance, of which Solidnames is an official agent.
